One year when the boys were very small, we'd had upheavals in our life, and found ourselves on our own.  It was scary sometimes, not knowing what the next week might bring.

So I taught them a little game.  Whenever we found a penny, I'd ask them, "What does it say on the penny?"  And they'd read the tiny letters aloud, "In God We Trust".

I would ask them, "What does that mean?"  And they would reply as I'd taught them, "It means we rely on God to provide for all our needs."

And through all our trying adventures that year, we found pennies in the most unlikely places.  Not just randomly on the pavement, but in odd places we looked -- next to a gumball machine, in the crevices in a stone wall, at the car wash, in places we'd looked not a minute before, inside the car's trunk, even stacked in threes!  Someone must have had a very good time calling our attention to them.

I don't know whether the penny game did more good for them, or for me.  And in all those days, when we found the pennies everywhere, we were always reassured, and we were always provided for.
